Flat Shoes and Foot Pain

Foot pain is certainly an unpleasant condition that many Americans can experience for a variety of reasons. Sometimes, foot pain is linked to the particular kind of shoe that you are wearing. While high heels are well-known for the damaging effects they can cause to your feet, other types of shoes can have adverse effects as well. Specifically, ballet flats can cause foot pain for several reasons. When ballet flats are not well padded, they can aggravate certain foot conditions, such as Achilles tendonitis and plantar fasciitis. Often, flats fail to provide the feet with sufficient arch support, which can make one more susceptible to the aforementioned foot conditions. To make your ballet flats more beneficial to the health of your feet, your podiatrist might recommend using insoles in the flats to increase arch support. If you are someone that enjoys wearing ballet flats, it is suggested that you consider contacting a podiatrist for help.

Plantar Fasciitis Causes Heel Pain

One of the most common causes of heel pain is the foot condition that is known as plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a portion of tissue that is found on the sole of the foot. It connects the heel to the toes, and it may become inflamed or torn for various reasons. These can include obesity, standing on hard surfaces for most of the day, or wearing shoes that do not fit correctly. Patients have found the pain may be worse in the morning upon arising, and may feel better as the day progresses. This may be a result of moving the foot, and it is beneficial that specific stretches are performed during the day for continued relief. Additionally, wearing custom-made orthotics may help to reduce existing inflammation and increase comfort level. If you have heel pain, it is suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can effectively diagnose and treat plantar fasciitis.

Plantar fasciitis is a common foot condition that is often caused by a strain injury. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact Jeffrey Rosenblatt, DPM from New York. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. The plantar fascia is a ligament that connects your heel to the front of your foot. When this ligament becomes inflamed, plantar fasciitis is the result. If you have plantar fasciitis you will have a stabbing pain that usually occurs with your first steps in the morning. As the day progresses and you walk around more, this pain will start to disappear, but it will return after long periods of standing or sitting.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Having high arches in your feet
  • Other foot issues such as flat feet
  • Pregnancy (due to the sudden weight gain)
  • Being on your feet very often

There are some risk factors that may make you more likely to develop plantar fasciitis compared to others. The condition most commonly affects adults between the ages of 40 and 60. It also tends to affect people who are obese because the extra pounds result in extra stress being placed on the plantar fascia.

Prevention

  • Take good care of your feet – Wear shoes that have good arch support and heel cushioning.
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • If you are a runner, alternate running with other sports that won’t cause heel pain

There are a variety of treatment options available for plantar fasciitis along with the pain that accompanies it. Additionally, physical therapy is a very important component in the treatment process. It is important that you meet with your podiatrist to determine which treatment option is best for you.

Treatment for Severe Ankle Sprains

Most ankle sprains heal in roughly six weeks, and podiatrists recommend using the rest, ice, compression, and elevation method to help this process along. However, if someone sustains a more severe ankle sprain, termed as a Grade 3 sprain, more serious measures may be needed and healing may take longer. With a Grade 3 sprain, the ligament has been torn completely, and swelling is significant. The ankle is tender and black and blue. Motion is extremely limited, and bearing weight is out of the question. At this point, it is essential to have immediate medical help from a podiatrist. Because the joint is unstable, a cast, brace, or protective boot will likely be prescribed. Crutches also may be required. In addition, a series of exercises to increase strength and help reduce the chances of a re-injury is generally suggested. If you have experienced a severe ankle sprain, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist as soon as possible.

Ankle sprains are common but need immediate attention. If you need your feet checked, contact Jeffrey Rosenblatt, DPM from New York. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains take place when the ligaments in your ankle are torn or stretched beyond their limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured, including twisting or rolling over onto your ankle, putting undue stress on it, or causing trauma to the ankle itself.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Mild to moderate bruising
  • Limited mobility
  • Swelling
  • Discoloration of the skin (depending on severity)

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

Treatment of a sprain depends on the severity.  Many times, people are told to rest and remain off their feet completely, while others are given an air cast. If the sprain is very severe, surgery may be required.

If you have suffered an ankle sprain previously, you may want to consider additional support such as a brace and regular exercises to strengthen the ankle.

Relief Methods for Sever’s Disease

Heel pain is a common symptom with Sever’s disease. It is a condition that affects children and young teenagers who engage in running and jumping activities, and it can be quite painful. Additionally, wearing shoes with studs may increase the chances of developing Sever’s disease. A growth spurt can cause the bones to grow faster than the surrounding muscles and tendons, and the Achilles tendon is often affected. This tendon connects the heel to the calf muscles and can become sore with existing heel pain. This condition can be properly diagnosed when symptoms and performance levels are noticed, and treatment can begin with temporarily stopping the activity that caused the pain. This is typically followed by performing stretches that can strengthen the affected heel. Mild relief may be found when cushioned heel pads are worn and the leg is frequently elevated, possibly helping to reduce existing swelling. Limping and standing on tip toes may indicate your active child has Sever’s disease, and if applicable, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can offer relief and treatment techniques.

Sever's disease often occurs in children and teens. If your child is experiencing foot or ankle pain, see Jeffrey Rosenblatt, DPM from New York. Our doctor can treat your child’s foot and ankle needs.

Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.

Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.

Symptoms

Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.

Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office located in Brooklyn, NY . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle injuries.
